Few people can deny how delicious fried fish can be. Fresh fish, with a crispy coating out of the fryer, paired with the perfect sauce… it’s a delicious meal that rings of the coastline’s bounty.

For those of us who try to be health-conscious, however, we know that fried foods are one category of food to limit in your diet or cut them out altogether. Foods deep-fried in oil are one of the foods responsible for serious health problems.

Does that mean you have to deprive yourself of the deliciously crisp texture and rich taste of foods like fried fish? Fortunately, thank you to air fryer technology, you can continue to enjoy “fried” foods while cutting out all the stuff that affects your health.

This is a quick recipe you are going to want to keep on hand. These air fryer fish tacos and their delectable, creamy cilantro sauce are made only with whole, healthy ingredients and are arguably better than any other homemade fish taco recipe out there – and are much better for your health. As a plus, the fish cooks fast – within 10-15 minutes.

Star Ingredients

Cod

The key to making this recipe delicious is making sure to get fresh cod.

You can make fried fish with almost any white fish, but cod has a neutral flavor and is very tender yet dense enough to keep from falling apart in the air fryer. However, if you don’t have access to cod, you can use other white fish like tilapia, catfish, or local options.

Panko

This recipe calls for Japanese panko breadcrumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs. Panko breadcrumbs are lighter and airier than standard breadcrumbs thanks to a unique baking process that originates in Japan. Panko breadcrumbs help to deliver the texture in the fish that would normally result from the frying process.

To get the panko to stick to the fish, you dip the fish in flour, then eggs.

Breading Spices

In theory, you could use just panko to get the right texture, but the parmesan, chili, and pepper in the breading mixture give the fish a slightly spicy taste that pairs wonderfully with the cilantro sauce.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt has a thick, creamy texture of sour cream, but it is packed with protein and lower in saturated fat. The tangy quality of the yogurt allows the cilantro and lime to shine through.

Horseradish and Jalapeño

Horseradish is naturally peppery and slightly astringent, which you feel through the nose and throat. Jalapeño is spicy, slightly burning the tongue. Both ingredients are equally potent but make quite a good pair.

Cilantro

Cilantro is, without a doubt, the star of the sauce. Also known as coriander or Mexican parsley, cilantro has a classically Latin American taste that is a requirement for classic tacos. Fresh lemon and lime juice mixed into the sauce really bring out the freshness of the herb.

Tips for Preparation

  • One of the issues first-time air fryer users run into is “loose” panko breadcrumbs that fall off the fish during frying. The key to getting the panko to stick is to pat-dry the fish before coating in flour. This will allow the flour to fully absorb the egg mixture, rather than excess water on the fish.
  • To ensure a more uniform flavor on the fish, shake the fish in a zip-lock bag with the breading ingredients rather than dipping it. This is because the smaller ingredients will usually sink to the bottom, leaving only the panko on the top for the first several pieces of fish.
  • Sometimes the Greek yogurt-based sauce can feel heavy with the air-fried fish. One way to get around this is to whip the dipping sauce. This will give you a lighter consistency that brings the flavors together.

If you are new to air frying, this recipe will, without-a-doubt, win you over; you still get to enjoy the crunchy consistency of fried fish without the excess oil. The wholesome ingredients in the breading and dipping sauce won’t weigh you down. The Latin-inspired herbs and spices will transport you to long white beaches and warm weather any time of the year.
